The Necessity of the "Cliche's"

I am very tired of going onto all sorts of forum sites and hearing people go on and on about how tired they are of the cliche classes. They're sick of seeing the same character in every game doing the same thing and leveling the same way. Well I'm sorry to all you sad people out there but those characters will continue to be the same for the rest of eternity in all the games surely to come until the day we all die.

The main attacked cliche classes:

The Warrior or Fighter
The Ranger
The Magic-User
The Cleric
The Rogue

I would like to point out that these are the base value of any class, and I will show you how.

The warrior was created for the sole purpose of destroying things and taking damage, he is also considered the "Tank", a being who can act as a form of wall to draw the attention of the monsters or opponents so that the weaker armored characters can still be effective in combat and not have to worry about being skewered by a spear.

People have said they're getting bored of the Warrior class. "He's too simple" I've heard this a thousand times, yet I can never stop laughing. The warrior was created to be simple, he is in fact the easiest character to play because all he has to focus on is a simple formula:

I Kill Things >> I Get Gold >> I Can Purchase Better Gear >> I Can Kill Bigger Things >> Repeat

But to appease those who don't understand what I meant about Warrior being a base value class I'll show you now. Take any game you have ever played and think hard about any character who might seem like a brawler type character. Without the Fighter or Warrior class we wouldn't get classes like Defender, Barbarian, or Knight; Some of the most played classes in any game. Why do people play these Warrior classes? Because people always have and always will enjoy the simple pleasure of being able to kill things with their bare hands if they felt the need to do it. Even Star Wars RPGs have warrior classes, and the main one is the Jedi Sentinel, the ultimate lightsaber user in the galaxy. So don't go around saying that you get bored of mindless slaughter because everyone in the world will know that you're lying and deep down you'll be kicking yourself in the gnads knowing that we're right. But let's move on to Rangers.

The Ranger to put it simply is a modified version of the warrior class. However instead of focusing on brute force they rely on agility and perception to survive. A ranger has the option though to put an arrow through your head or beat you to death with a large branch he picked up off the ground. He also has a number of abilities that allow him to get to you in the wilderness before you realize you're walking through it. Some classes that have evolved from the ranger are the Beast Master and the Pathfinder (A very skilled archer). There's not a whole lot more I can rant about on the Ranger so I'll move on yet again.

The Magic-User. How can anyone say they're tired of this cliche? And I'm not joking I've actually heard people say that this class was too cliche! If we didn't have magic-users in the very beginning of gaming then we wouldn't have the amazing super power characters we have today. All those psychic abilities and astral powers were based off the spells cast by the magic-user. And there are so many different forms of magic-users: Mages, Wizards, Sorcerers, Warlocks, Magicians, Necromancers, and so on... They have an endless array of spells that can bring misery and destruction to all that oppose them and people actually say they don't want to play this class because it's a cliche... I pity their souls...

The Cleric! A fellow magic-user but at the same time a different class all together. What this character uses isn't exactly spells but divine blessings given unto thee by the gods they worship. Without this ultimate cliche class all characters would be dead before the battles began. The cleric (or "Healbot") is a extreme necessity to any RPG expidition or the party would surely perish several times before completing their sometimes impossible task. Without the cleric we wouldn't have RPGs to play because we'd get so sick of dying all the time we would want nothing more to do with them. So god damn all of you who feel we need something better than a cleric for a class.

And finally the Rogue... Personally this is one of my favorite classes. I am contradicting myself slightly by saying sometimes you do need a break from mindless slaughter BUT! you simply need to replace that mindless slaugter with directed evisceration of several opponents who will never see you coming. If you didn't have a rogue you couldn't get through locked steel doors or disarm deadly traps. Who would take out the sentries without alerting all the other members of the orc encampment? Some classes people love have branched from this as well: The assassin, bounty hunter, and even the ninja and pirate classes were based off the rogue class because that's what they actually were in real life. But besides all these classes branching off of the basic five there are even combo classes!

What do you get when you combine a warrior and a cleric? A Paladin!
How bout a rogue and a magic-user? A Bard!
Ranger and Magic-user = Druid or Shaman

And these are just a few examples I can think of at the moment, but there are likely hundreds more combinations between the classes but are still based of the five most cliched classes in the world, which technically are the ONLY classes in the world if you break it down far enough.

A good example of creating classes from the static five is a class list I made up for a friends rpg which afterwards was scrapped for a different concept. But nonetheless, my friend gave me seven classes:

Melee Classes (Strength): Fighter and Brute
Dextrous Classes (Dexterity): Rogue and Ranger
Abnatural Classes (Intelligence): Magician and Mentalist
Utility Classes (Wisdom): Mechanic

Now here's the fun part. Each of these seven classes needed to upgrade into one of two possible classes, already adding 14 more than there was at the begininng. But it doesn't end there, now each of these new classes needs to be able to upgrade into one of two possible new classes adding another 28 classes to the list. Yes I made seven class trees, each containing seven classes and all adding up to a total of 49 classes in all. However each of these classes still are based off of the five ultimately cliched classes I listed at the top of this post.

So those of you who complain about characters being too cliche just remember, all characters are unoriginal and in some way (usually completely) relate to one of the five classes above.

To all those who actually sat down and read this whole thing you must have as much free time as I do or more and I apologize for wasting valuable minutes of your life to share my rant with you.
